Feature & Flexibility

  • No Age Limit: Generally there is no upper age limit for registration to NIOS courses. The lower age limit for admission to secondary courses is 15 years and that for senior secondary is 16 years.
  • Choice in Medium of Instructions :Hindi, English, Urdu, Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam and Oriya mediums at Secondary stage.
  • Hindi, English, Urdu mediums at Sr. Secondary stage. Choice of Subjects : You can choose any subject combination from amongst the subjects offered in the courses of Study for Academic Courses but can not take more than two languages.
  • Combination of Academic & Vocational Subjects : One stand alone vocational subject mentioned in Table – I on page no. 12 can be combined with the academic courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. Separate admission for such a subject has to be taken at one of the AVIs listed in Appendix-A. The pass credit obtained in this subject can be transferred on request to his/her performance in the Secondary/Senior Secondary examinations. The request on a plain paper to the Director(Evaluation) of NIOS should be accompanied by the original Secondary/ Senior Secondary mark sheet and the photocopy of the mark sheet of the Vocational Education examination.
  • Flexibility in examination : You can avail nine chances to appear in the public examination spread over a period of five years.
  • Credit Accumulation: You can choose to appear in any one or more subjects in an Examination and earn credit till all subjects required for certification are successfully completed in Academic courses as well as in Package Vocational courses.
  • Validity of Registration: You can complete your course in a maximum period of five years from the year of registration and take nine or fewer public examination chances to successfully complete the course.
  • Transfer of Credit Facility for the Academic Courses : If you are an Ex- Secondary/Sr. Secondary student of CBSE or State Open School, and have passed in at least one subject and have not qualified in the course during the last five years, you may seek registration in the respective NIOS programme. You will have the option to get the credit of maximum of two subjects passed in CBSE/State Open School transferred.
